Since Jan. 22, 2021, when the Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today Act (the SAFE-T Act) became law, the Village has received several calls and questions regarding the impact of this legislation.
SAFE-T Act Information
The SAFE-T Act impacts many aspects of the criminal justice system, including pre-arrest diversion, policing, pretrial, sentencing, and corrections. The Illinois Municipal League (IML) says the SAFE-T Act “will have a measurable impact on municipal operations, law enforcement, and the public.” Notably, many of the recent headlines about the SAFE-T Act are about the Pretrial Fairness Act - which affects the use of cash bail – that would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.
Please see the Illinois Municipal League Criminal Justice and Policing Reforms for more SAFE-T Act information. In addition, the entire almost 800-page bill is available at the General Assembly website: Ill. General Assembly Public Act 101-0652.
