The Willowbrook Police Department wishes to alert the public about a Prize Winning Money scam that has been received by some residents.
A resident received a letter from Eureka Securities Services along with a check for $3,980.00. The letter indicates that the resident has won $250,000.00 and the check is to cover taxes. The resident was told that he was picked from a pool of people that had used their credit cards at Home Depot or WalMart.
When the resident attempted to deposit the check, the bank recognized it as a fraud. The fraud works by the victim depositing the bad check into their account and then mailing off a personal check or money order to cover the taxes for the prize money. By the time it is discovered that the check is a fake, the victim has lost their own money and the suspects are rarely, if ever, caught.
The Willowbrook Police Department would like to remind citizens that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't.
